02-6-11 | ERROR COINS

Error coins are fascinating and rare.  Since 2002, the amount of striking errors to leave the US Mints are few and far between.  This means there is a shortage of new error coins entering the market.  This shortage, coupled with more collectors and investors entering the market has been the cause to see price increases.  Just think, a 1943 Bronze Cent sold for an incredible 1.7 million dollars in September 2010.  This broke all price records for a Lincoln Cent and for an Error coin.

It seems most people are attracted to error coins due to the unusual look and rarity of these coins.  While the US Mints have been striking billions and billions of coins each year, the amount of error coins, prior to 2002, are probably measured in the hundreds for all error coins found each year.  After 2002, virtually no striking errors have been found.  When I say virtually no striking errors, you can probably fit the amount of striking errors found since 2002 in the plam of both hands.

If you attended the 2011 FUN Show and watched the auction for error coins, you would have been amazed at the amount of bidding from the floor, phones and the internet.  Majestic Rarities was able to purchase many very desirable pieces.  Many people are now competing to own the coins listed in 100 Greatest US Error Coins.  This is a great educational book to explain the minting process and describe how each type of Error coin was struck.  Knowing how a coin is struck and the minting process will help in all areas of numimatics.  This book also shows incredible pictures and details of the 100 Greatest US Error Coins that many people are now trying to acquire.

If you would like to purchase 100 Greatest US Error Coins, you can find this book on our website, Whitman Publishing, Amazon and other book stores.
