Many people email me and ask about trying to time the market so they can purchase Modern Chinese coins at a lower price.  I have mentioned this before and need to mention again - do not try to time the market.  This is a big mistake. 

My opinion is to purchase nice coins at fair prices.  We are a buyer of the Modern Chinese coins we like every day, regardless if the market is moving up or down.  How much do you think you will really save by waiting?  The question should really be phrased, how much will you have to pay extra for trying to time the market by waiting?    

Personal experience has shown that if you wait to purchase Modern Chinese coins you want, you will most likely pay more than if you had made the purchase at the time the coin was offered.  Why? 

When the market moves up, the coin might not be available, available in the grade you want or for the price you want to pay.  You keep thinking of the price you could have paid and try to strike a deal that will not happen.  Do you know how many people and how many hours I have spent talking and listening to stories about what someone could have paid at one time or another.  

I always mention how a good deal is being able to buy a nice coin at a fair price.  This held true 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 2 years ago and still holds true today.  For those who purchased coins when offered, they have reaped the benefits of price increases and satisfaction of owning the coin they wanted, even if they paid above market pricing at the time of purchase.

For those who chose to wait and try to time the market, they were not as fortunate.  Here is a quick observation, for every one person who gets lucky, there are about 10 others who are not as fortunate.  The odds are not in your favor trying to time the market. 

I am living proof of making mistakes and not purchasing certain coins.  Some coins I was able to find at a later date and had to pay way more than when first offered.  It did not matter if the market was up or down.  It took me a long time to accept this but in the end, when I would pay double or triple the original price, I learned my lesson.    

Learn from my mistakes and experience - do not try to time the market.  Purchase when a nice coin is offered at a fair price.  You will be much happier, you will have less frustration and you will probably save me the time from hearing another story about a coin that could have been purchased.
