10-1-10 | PHILADELPHIA SHOW IN OCTOBER
ERROR COINS

We atteneded the Philly Show because we were asked to speak about error coins and the minting process.  We had a good crowd both days we spoke.  There were lots of great questions and interest.  This could not have happened at a better time.  The 1943 D cent struck on a bronze planchet had just sold for a record of $1.7M a couple of weeks earlier.  Error coins continue to bring strong money and set records in the process.  This is a testiment about the strength for this segment of numismatics.

We were forturnate that Whitman gave a huge exhibit area to show and explain really dramatic errors and the minting process.  This type of education helps everyone understand how these errors came to be.  By reviewing the minting process, step by step, really helps educate those who want to take the time to learm more.  There were probably 15 display cases dedicated to educational material with written text, photos and of course many coins to correspond with the literature.

It was unbelievable all of the coins brought for me to examine.  98% of the coins I was shown were fake.  The few that were not fake were just OK.  It is important to be able to identify something fake from something real.  Having this imformation stems from learning and continuing education.

Our book, The 100 Greatest US Errors is selling well.  We received so many nice comments.  Purchase one for these books for the holidays.
