09-19-11 | Reading is Fundamental

I know my titles are simple but the content is powerful.  Reading is so important if you want to stay ahead of the curve.  I can list example after example of how reading has helped me and given me an edge over others.  Knowledge gives me the ability of knowing when to pay way more than market or to stay away.

Regular reading materials are:

Pricepedia - I keep a copy in my car (I am always driving) and a copy on my desk.  I find this to be a great resource for pricing information.  I take many factors into consideration when pricing a coin.  Peter's Pricedpedia helps me a great deal for the coins I might not buy and sell on a regular basis.  You can find this at www.PandaCollecor.com

Coin World is a great coin magazine.  If you do not have a subscription, you should.  They always highlight different auctions, new price records for coins, etc...I read this weekly and look forward to their monthly World Coin edition.  If you are not reading, you are missing a great deal.

I study every auction result for the coins I like.  You have no idea how many auctions there are that contain great coins.  I actually keep a log of the important coins I watch.  I usually know what sold, for how much, what the coin looked like, sometimes I will know who purchased, who the bidders were, etc...You might not think this is important but you can never have enough good information.

I receive countless emails that contain articles.  No, I do not read all of these unless the tiltle catches my attention and makes me want to open and read.

Numismatic News is good.  Most of the information you read in Coin World you will also find in Numismatic News.

The Numismatist - I do not read this from cover to cover because a great deal of the information might not pertain to items I collect.  I will tell you the September issue is great.  It discusses the 1913 Liberty Nickels and also the 1913 Buffalo Nickel struck on a cent planchet.  I love error coins and think most are way undervalue.  I enjoyed reading the article "A Forgotten Nickel and Its Companions."  Great article for error coin enthusiasts.

There is lots of information on the internet.  Not all of the information you read is correct.  You have to be careful of the propaganda.

You can always log into NGC and read what they have to say about conserving and grading.  You can do the same for large auction companies.  If you read information from Heritage, Champion and other auction firms, you get a flavor of what is hot and what is not.

People call or email about what is said on the Chinese Coin Forum.  I have been a member for several years but do not participate.  I think this is both good and not so good.  I love this concept.  However, the times I have jumped in to read or have been told of certain subjects, it seems like lots of people voicing their opinions or complaining about something.  I did not get the feeling of being more educated.  As mentioned, I love the concept.  I am sure this is a great way for people to reach out and for others to try to help.  I am sure this will continue to evolve and help many people as time continues.

My Blog - I encourage people to call or email me with their questions.  You should because many other people take advantage of listening to a person who travels into markets in the US and overseas, participates in all major auctions, buys and sells on a daily basis and I can go on and on.  As most people know, I have one of the largest collections of both error coins and Modern Chinese coins.  This means I put my money where my mouth is and follow the same advice I give to anyone contacting me.  I might be the only dealer with a huge collection and who does not care about selling.  I am more concerned about buying great coins than selling.  The problem is I like very rare and expensive coins.  For me, these have performed extremely well.  Contact me if you want the most up-to-date information about what is going on in the market.
