I just returned from Shanghai.  It was great to spend time in the new coin market.  This just opened about a month ago.  Everything is enclosed and the floors are all tiled.  It is much nicer and more convenient than the old market. 

There are so many great coins for sale.  The prices are "sky high" but well worth it.  I asked several people why there are so many great coins for sale.  The basic answer revolved around two concepts. 

1.  In the past 18 months, many great coins have appeared in auction and dealers have been accumulating these rarities.  There are so many great coins being offered in auction.  Even as prices continue to rise, dealers are purchasing these rarities because they believe these coins are still way undervalued.  I will discuss my feelings about pricing in a separate blog.   

2.  People who purchased these great rarities back in the late 80's and early 90's have held these coins for roughly 12-21 years.  Their purchase price was so low and the current prices are so high.  These collectors are now much older (12-21 years to be exact) and feel it is time to sell to reap the benefits and allow someone else the pleasure of owning these rare coins.

Please look at the pictures of the new market.  If you go to Shanghai, you have to visit Mr Li, his wife Joan, and Eric at the Dragon Store B097.  They are really nice people with great coins.  Do not mention my name, Joan will probably hit you.  I had a lot of fun talking and comparing pricing information with them.
