I was talking with a friend a couple of days ago - let's call him Joe.  Joe was telling me about a Modern Chinese coin he just purchased.  It is a very good coin that has a low mintage, popular and always in demand type of coin.  I said to Joe, "so now you have two of these coins."  Joe replied that he only had one.  He reminded me that he sold his original coin about 15-18 months ago.  "Right, I remember."  We both laughed.  Please continue reading, this is a true story and it is funny. 

This is what happened.  Joe was contacted by a person who really wanted this coin.  Joe did not want to sell this coin.  Joe considered it a jewel in his collection.  This is not a common coin.  The person who wanted to purchase this coin was very persistent and continued to make offers every week.  Finally, the amount got to be so high that Joe felt he should sell this coin.  He thought he was selling this well above the market price.  How much higher can this go?  Joe thought he could use this money to purchase other coins.  Both agreed and the sale was concluded.  I know what you are saying.  Why is this funny?  Transactions like this happen every day.  Let me continue.

The person who really wanted the coin did not have the immediate funds available to pay for the coin.  (OK, this part is not so funny.)   

The person wanted this coin so badly he went and sold his car to get the money needed to pay for this coin.  HE SOLD HIS CAR!  Come on, this is funny.  But wait, it gets better.  I am not going to mention the price he paid.  I am only going to say that he sold his car to purchase a coin that is now worth double the price he paid (in only 15-18 months.) 

The person sold his Pinto and is now driving a Mercedes! 

My friend Joe missed this coin in his collection so much that he had to have this coin back.  He searched for over a year to find another.  He finally found this coin and purchased. 

1.  The story is funny because a person sold their car to purchase a great coin (I do not recommend anyone do this.) 
2.  The person who made this purchase is happy because he always wanted this coin, not to mention the tremendous appreciation of the coin.  
3.  Joe found and purchased another coin at double his selling price of the original and now feels this coin can appreciate a great deal more. 

Everyone is happy, no one got hurt and best of all, there is a great story to tell. 

We have all sold coins that have increased in value a great deal more than our original selling price.  This is a bull market.  This has been a bull market, therefore, this is going to happen.  Prices increase weekly depending on the coin and all of the variables associated.  Relax and enjoy this great period of time in this section of numismatics.
