To show the continued strength of the Modern Chinese coin market, a new world record was established for a Modern Chinese coin.  This is not just any coin.  This is the 1991 5 Kilo 10th Anniversary Gold Panda.  It recently sold for almost $1.6 Million USD.  This is the highest price of any single Modern Chinese coin sold as of this writing.  The mintage is only 10 pieces.    

What makes this so interesting is about 10 months ago, another 1991 5 Kilo 10th Anniversary Gold Panda sold for approximately $850,000.  This had the important serial #1 stamped in the edge of the coin (Serial #1 coins command a premium when sold.)  The reason this is so interesting is only 10 months have passed and another 5 Kilo Gold Panda is sold for almost 2X (double) the price and it was not a serial #1.

If this does not give everyone an indication of the strength of the Modern Chinese coin market for rare coins, I don't know what will.  I believe this market is still in its infancy.  New collectors and investors are entering every day.  Prices keep increasing.  In the next 12 months, I feel we will look back and think about the bargain prices of today.  It seems the biggest mistake made when purchasing in a bull market is not paying high enough prices for good coins or not buying enough.
